The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, a week or on a regular basis.

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia needs volunteers to provide one-to-one tutoring in English as a second language. Training workshops will be held at the James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Rd., Falls Church, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and Aug. 18, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 14 and 21. Tutors must attend all four sessions. A charge of $35 will cover the cost of books and supplies. No teaching or foreign language skills are necessary. For more information, call 703-237-0866.

The ESL and Immigrant Ministries Program needs volunteers to teach English as a second language to adult immigrants in 20 locations in Northern Virginia. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association needs volunteers to help with tour marshaling, the kid's bike rodeo, rider registration and more at its 12- and 32-mile Giant Food BikeDC ride in September. For more information, call 202-628-2500.

Haven of Northern Virginia needs volunteers to provide emotional support to the bereaved, the seriously ill and the dying and their family and friends. Volunteers must be available weekdays and must be able to commit to a minimum of 2 1/2 hours a week for phone duty for at least a year. Training will be offered in September.
