Calvin David Smoot
Calvin David Smoot, 76, a civilian electrician for the Army Corps of Engineers, died of cancer Aug. 2 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He was a resident of Falls Church.
Mr. Smoot, who was born in Campbell County, Va., served in World War II with the Army Air Forces in the Pacific theater and after the war with the Air Force in occupied Japan.
He left the military in 1948 and became a lifelong member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. In 1953, he started work with the Army Corps of Engineers, where he was an electrical and material estimator until his retirement in 1986.
He enjoyed playing cards and billiards.
His wife of 47 years, Reva C. Smoot, died in 1996.
Survivors include four sons, Calvin "Dave" Smoot Jr. of Danville, Va., Wayne D. Smoot of Morrisville, Mark D. Smoot of Broad Run and Todd D. Smoot of Manassas; a brother; a sister; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Evelyn Christine Beard
Evelyn Christine Beard, 94, a longtime resident of Riverdale, died Aug. 2 at the Waldorf Health Care Center of cardiovascular disease.
Mrs. Beard was born in Philadelphia and moved to Hagerstown, Md., as a child. She graduated from Hagerstown High School.
She worked in a shoe and legging factory in Hagerstown during the 1920s but after marrying didn't work outside the home. She moved to Riverdale in 1951.
Her husband, Vernon Beard, died in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine Blackwell of Upper Marlboro; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
