The Breakdown

When Ed Hottle was an assistant at Wesley College in Delaware, he was responsible for recruiting in Southern Maryland. So, when he was named Calvert's coach in March, he was familiar with the area and the history of the program.

"The football tradition here has been outstanding the last eight years, and it's important for [the current players] to draw on that," he said. "I've recruited kids from Calvert High, and they're tough kids."

They've also been shy. The many varsity newcomers started practice a little subdued, unsure of asserting themselves.

"They're still like that," Hottle said. "We're quiet at practice. But on [the third practice], we started hitting, and then they opened up a bit."

Hottle expects his offensive line to be strong, and it helps to have back senior Garrett Denton, a two-way starter last year. Senior Danny Bernard should shine at linebacker.

Hottle wants to get the ball in the hands of junior Kevin Freeburger as much as he can. Freeburger was a slick punt returner last season. Look for him to show up occasionally at various spots on offense, too.
