Robert C. Downing
Air Force Technical Sergeant
Robert C. Downing, 71, a retired technical sergeant in the Air Force and a construction supervisor, died of coronary and respiratory disease Aug. 28 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was a resident of Upper Marlboro.
Sgt. Downing served 20 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1971. He had two overseas tours of duty: Guam during the Korean War and Thailand and Vietnam during the Vietnam War era.
After leaving the service, he was a construction laborer in the Washington area, becoming a superintendent within a year and a half. He worked for Furman Builders, Eisinger Construction, Stavro Construction and Suthard Construction.
Sgt. Downing was born in Cincinnati. He married in 1960 in Forestville. His hobbies included remote-control airplanes, camping, hunting, fishing, golf, taxidermy and tinkering in his workshop.
Four children followed him into military service, one in the Navy, two in the Marine Corps and one in the Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Young Downing of Upper Marlboro; six children, Robert Downing Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Marcella McCarthy and Claud Downing, both of Fort Worth, Paul Downing of Livermore, Maine, Natalie Hubbard of Chesapeake Beach and Christopher Downing of Huntingtown; a sister; a brother; and 13 grandchildren.
