Evelyn Nielson Verrier

Bank Executive Secretary

Evelyn Nielson Verrier, 95, an executive secretary at Riggs National Bank in Washington from the early 1980s to 1995, died Sept. 4 at Capital Hospice in Arlington. She had congestive heart failure.

Mrs. Verrier, a McLean resident, settled in the Washington area in 1979. After leaving Riggs, she did volunteer work at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

She was born in Stillwater, Okla., and raised in Des Moines, where she received a teaching certificate from Drake University.

Early in her career, she was an office administrator for an insurance company in Des Moines and office manager for a realty company in Kansas City, Mo.

Her husband, James Verrier Sr., whom she married in 1937, died in 1990.

Survivors include two children, James M. Verrier Jr. of Springfield and Julianne E. Verrier of Annandale; and two grandchildren.

Joseph Leonard Tracy Jr.

Joseph Leonard Tracy Jr., 68, a civil engineer who worked for the Montgomery County transportation department from 1968 to 1994, retiring as chief of the parking division, died Sept. 2 at his home in Silver Spring. He had cancer.

Mr. Tracy was a native of Bristol, Conn., and a 1958 civil engineering graduate of Norwich University in Vermont. He also received a certificate in traffic engineering from Yale University and a master's degree in city planning from University of Maryland.

He did traffic engineering work for the transportation departments in Connecticut and Ohio before settling in the Washington area in 1968.

After retiring, he did consulting work on urban planning and parking needs. In the late 1990s, he lived in Poland while working for Worldwide Parking as a consultant. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Silver Spring and the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included golfing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Patricia McCarthy Tracy of Silver Spring; four sons, Kevin Tracy, Sean Tracy and Dennis Tracy, all of Columbia, and Jeremy Tracy of San Diego; a daughter, Kelly Rizik of McLean; a sister; and seven grandchildren.
