More than 40 Anne Arundel County students will be named Maryland Distinguished Scholar finalists and semifinalists during a recognition ceremony Sept. 18 conducted by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. The Distinguished Scholar program provides $3,000 scholarships to 350 Maryland high school seniors every year. Students can use the scholarship to attend any Maryland college or university and must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average to renew the annual award.

Parents have until Sept. 17 to register their children for Academics Etc., an after-school enrichment program for elementary and middle school students. The six-week program offers courses in algebra, astronomy, poetry, history, photography, musical theater, jewelry design, cooking, scrapbooking and yoga. Courses are held in public schools in Davidsonville, Edgewater, Gambrills, Odenton, Crownsville, Severna Park and Pasadena. Tuition is $65 plus materials.
