Annapolis Department of Transportation has been improving the landscaping on Chinquapin Round Road by creating gardens with Maryland native plants. Volunteers are needed to spruce up existing gardens and plant more flowers today, tomorrow and Saturday. They should bring gloves and wear work clothes and work shoes. Cats R Us Inc., a nonprofit feral cat rescue group, operates two small shelters in the Annapolis and Arnold areas. At the shelter in Arnold, stray and feral cats are humanely trapped, evaluated, vaccinated, sterilized and ear-tipped for identification by veterinarians. The shelter in Annapolis houses cats and kittens found abandoned at feral sites. The cats stay at the shelter as long as it takes to find them permanent homes. Qualified volunteers are needed to provide foster homes. Volunteers 13 and older also are needed to help clean the shelters or spend time with the cats. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary needs volunteers to help collect, identify and count stream invertebrates for the evaluation of stream health from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 17. Volunteers also are needed to help monitor the fish population in shallow water and wetlands of Two Run Creek by catching, identifying, measuring and then releasing the fish from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 18. Our Daily Bread, the largest soup kitchen in Maryland, is in downtown Baltimore and serves more than 780 hot lunches every day of the year and breakfast on weekday mornings. Sarah's House is a housing program for homeless women, children and men that provides case management, child care, transportation and employment services at Fort Meade in west Anne Arundel County. Volunteer orientations are offered most Fridays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Sarah's House.

Volunteers are needed to provide morning or evening child care, to tutor and to assist with homework in the evenings. Help also is needed for summer camp and front desk work at all hours (answering phones, sorting mail, etc). Drivers are needed for donation pickup and to drive guests to and from appointments (a van is provided). Volunteer groups are needed to prepare monthly dinners for 40 to 50 shelter guests. Sarah's House also is seeking donations of large diapers, baby wipes, general cleaning supplies, bathroom tissue and more. Volunteers 14 and under must have adult supervision.
