Dulles Breaks Record

With 2.2 Million Fliers

A record 2.2 million passengers flew in or out of Dulles International Airport in July. The previous record was 1.9 million in June 2000, said Tom Sullivan, spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

Dulles's Only Gas Station

Closed for Renovation

The Exxon gas station at Dulles, the only station at the airport, has been closed for renovation. The new facility will be larger and include a carwash. It is scheduled to reopen early next year.

Dulles Day Festival

Includes Plane Pull

The Dulles Day Family Festival will be held Saturday on the cargo ramp between buildings 5 and 6.

Teams of 20 people will attempt to pull a 150,000-pound aircraft 12 feet in a timed competition. Other events include aircraft and car displays, music, children's activities and a raffle for free airline tickets.

The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is sponsored by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police to raise money for Special Olympics Virginia. Admission and parking are free. For more information, visit www.planepull.com or call 703-417-8536.

PalmOne Store Opens

At Reagan National

A palmOne retail store has opened at Reagan National Airport, selling hand-held computers; "smartphones," which include capabilities of hand-held computers; and accessories. The store, in Concourse C, is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends.

BWI to Get Training

On Disaster Readiness

Environmental Tectonics Corp. will develop and conduct three one-week virtual reality training sessions at Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

The simulated disaster scenarios, one scheduled for November and the other two next year, will train airport personnel to respond to a hazardous material spill, a bomb and a security breach.

The company, which conducted a fire and rescue training exercise at BWI in March, was chosen by the Maryland Aviation Administration.

New Flight

American Airlines will add a round-trip flight between National and its Dallas/Fort Worth hub by next summer. Schedules have not yet been finalized.
