Charles County Fair
The first of Southern Maryland's three county fairs begins today at the fairgrounds south of La Plata. The four-day event features livestock, products and crafts, 4-H and youth activities, entertainment, amusement rides, games and food. 5-10 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-11 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Getting lost means having fun at the Bowles Farm maze in Clements. This year's maze features an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet and the words NavAir and Patuxent River, MD carved into cornfields. Two trails are available, and the estimated time to complete them is 20 minutes to an hour. The farm also has a petting zoo, acres of pumpkins for sale, hayrides, a mini-maze for small children and a straw mountain for older children. There is a large picnic area with food and refreshments available to purchase. The maze is open 4-9 p.m. tomorrow, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. On Mondays through Thursdays, the maze is open by appointment for school and tour groups. The maze will be open to the public Fridays through Sundays through Oct. 31. At Southern Maryland's outdoor arts festival, more than 120 artists and artisans from around the country will display and sell sculpture, paintings, jewelry, wood designs, photographs, baskets, mobiles and glassware. The Children's Discovery Tent will include felt storyboard building activities, stained glass ornament making, mural painting and graffiti art. The event will honor the Seahorses by the Bay public art project, organized by Annmarie Garden and the Calvert Marine Museum to benefit the art departments of Calvert County schools. Also on display will be an exhibit of murals designed by 12 Southern Maryland teenagers during an art class in July at Annmarie Garden. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
