Used Bicycles Sought

The annual used bicycle drive, sponsored by the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center and the Columbia Jewish Congregation to benefit poor communities in Latin America, is set for Saturday.

"We have sent over 1,000 bikes over the years," organizer Tom McCarthy said. An unused adult bicycle stored in a shed or garage could give a Latin American family a way to travel to work, school and a health clinic, he said.

"It's just like giving a family up here a car."

The collection is conducted in cooperation with the national group Pedals for Progress, which also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world.

Donors are asked to bring their bikes between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to the Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Rd., Columbia. Contributions to help cover the cost of shipping the bikes will also be accepted, and tax receipts will be given, McCarthy said.
