Play of the Week

In the opening quarter of a scoreless game, Bowie Coach Ray Hicks and his staff noticed an opportunity for a big play against Parkdale's defense.

"They were stacking pretty heavy to our tight end," Hicks said. "And they were coming hard on the back side."

So one play after a simple run up the middle, the Bulldogs used a little trickery to take a 6-0 lead. Senior WR Kevin Teel took a handoff from senior QB Francis Stephens on an end-around to the left and went 35 yards for a touchdown that gave Bowie a lead it never gave up in a 26-19 Prince George's 4A victory this past Friday.

"All we did was use their overpursuit against them," Hicks said. "We got around the end, but Kevin did most of it on his own."

Stephens later connected with Teel for a 65-yard touchdown pass and Bowie hung on to improve to 2-0 and 1-0 in the 4A league, the Bulldogs' best start in Hicks's three seasons. And senior RB Kerel Whitehead, who has yet to play this season because of a pulled right hamstring, could return soon, Hicks said.

"We're going to take them one game at a time, but yeah, [starting 2-0 is] a real good feeling," Hicks said. "We're anticipating [Whitehead's] return is going to help in other places, give some other people some breathers."
