AARP Tax-Aide, a free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, needs volunteers to help taxpayers complete their federal and state income tax forms. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Tax counselors receive free training and become IRS certified by passing an agency examination. Fall for Fairfax, the annual fall festival at the county Government Center, needs volunteers to help ensure safety, assist in children's activities and help setup and takedown. For more information, call 703-324-5392 or visit www.FallForFairfax.com.

Fairfax County 4-H needs volunteers to serve as project leaders for a new 4-H community club in Fairfax City. Project leaders work with small groups of children, in third grade and older, to share knowledge and lead activities teaching about a specific subject over four to eight sessions. Possible projects include cooking, dog care, environment, gardening, photography, rocketry and sewing. ASSE International needs area representatives to help promote its nonprofit high school student exchange program by finding and interviewing families interested in hosting a student and acting as counselors for the international teens during their exchange year. Volunteer Fairfax will hold orientations for its Volunteers for Change program for adults. After orientation, volunteers can choose from more than 40 monthly community service projects throughout Northern Virginia. They include planting trees, bagging food for homeless families, tutoring adult students in English as a second language, playing bingo with the disabled and participating in special community-wide events throughout the year. An orientation meeting will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. next Thursday and 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 3, Volunteer Fairfax office, 10530 Page Ave., Fairfax.
