Taste of Bethesda needs volunteers for two- and three-hour shifts between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Oct. 2. Duties include setting up and dismantling the event, helping guests park and navigate the event, staffing information booths and running children's activities. Department of Health and Human Services, Aging and Disability Services needs volunteers for the assisted-living ombudsman program that works with residents and families and assists in making informed choices about selecting a group home. A training session is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4-7. Volunteers are asked to commit four hours per week for at least one year. Literacy Council of Montgomery County needs volunteers to teach adults to read, write and speak English. Knowledge of a second language is not required, and hours are flexible. Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission's Montgomery County Department of Park and Planning needs volunteers ages 14 and older to construct, rehabilitate and clean up the park's natural surface trails from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends. Basic gardening and carpentry skills are essential and tools are provided. Teens ages 14 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Wear protective clothing, including gardening gloves, and bring water, lunch and a snack. Linkages to Learning seeks volunteers to teach English language skills to immigrant parents. Day and evening weekday positions are available at schools located in Silver Spring, Wheaton, Rockville, Gaithersburg and Germantown. Prior teaching experience and knowledge of a second language is not required. A commitment of 16 weeks with two sessions lasting one to two hours each per week is requested.
