A year after Hurricane Isabel pummeled the Washington region, the rebuilding in North Beach has transformed the Calvert County town on the Chesapeake Bay. The boardwalk is back, condominiums are under construction, and there are plans for a hotel and spa.

350 Families Still in Trailers
Nearly 700 families in Maryland and Virginia received temporary housing assistance after Isabel struck the area Sept. 18 and 19, 2003. About 350 of them are still in trailers after a year of battling with insurers, waiting on financing and trying to hire overbooked contractors to repair or rebuild their damaged homes.

Presidential candidate Ralph Nader secured a spot on Maryland's November ballot when the state's highest court ruled that election officials improperly rejected hundreds of disputed signatures on petitions in support of his candidacy.

Crash Kills Three on Route 301
Three people died early Thursday morning in a fiery crash on Route 301 just north of Charles County. The accident was triggered when a taxicab swerved to avoid a car abandoned in the left lane of northbound Route 301. The taxi went across the median and hit a southbound dump truck, which crossed the median and struck vehicles in the northbound lanes. Commuter traffic was snarled for several hours by the wreck, which also left two people seriously injured.
