The Cultural Arts Foundation of Anne Arundel County will host a free public relations workshop at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Chesapeake Room of the Heritage Center, 2664 Riva Rd., Annapolis. Titled "Publicity and Marketing Tips for Nonprofit Organizations," the workshop will focus on effective press release writing and communications strategies. Two Anne Arundel County businesses received awards from the Maryland Chamber of Commerce during an awards celebration Sept. 17.

Robert Andrew -- The Salon and Spa won the Small Business of the Year award in the category for businesses with 51 to 200 employees. The Gambrills-based business calls itself the largest independently owned salon and spa on the East Coast, according to publicity material. The salon donates hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides wigs to underprivileged children who have suffered long-term hair loss related to medical conditions.

The National Security Agency, at Fort Meade, won the Partner in Business award. The agency works with the Anne Arundel County Economic Development Corp. and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development to help local companies develop commercially viable technology. During fiscal 2004 the agency awarded more than $1.8 billion to Maryland businesses.

Anne Arundel Community College will host a seminar on information security from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at the school's Arundel Mills campus, 7009 Arundel Mills Cir., Hanover. The seminar will cover the impact of information security on the commercial marketplace, national homeland security, public policy, education and the workforce. It is geared to government agencies and businesses involved in information security. Christopher C. Foster, Maryland's deputy secretary for business and economic development, will talk about Maryland's changing business environment.
