Morocco Comes to McLean

The McLean Community Center will hold its annual fall cultural festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the center.

This year's event, called "Magical Morocco: Sahara to the Sea," will feature costumed musicians and singers, children's arts and crafts workshops, exhibits, traditional Moroccan food, a marketplace, pony rides, face painting, camel petting, storytelling and more. There will also be a Moroccan wedding.

Among the entertainers will be contemporary singer Mourad, performing in English, French and Moroccan.

Singer Pinhas, who is from Morocco, will perform music from the Moroccan Arab-Judeo repertoire.

A local Moroccan group, the Kasbah Band, will perform, as will Sounds of Morocco, playing Moroccan folk music in troubadour form, roving with various instruments and dressed in full traditional outfits.

The festival is produced by the center in cooperation with the Washington Moroccan Club and Friends of Morocco.

The Many Tastes of Great Falls

The second annual Taste of Great Falls . . . A Town Celebration will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 10 on the village green in the Village Center.

The celebration will feature food prepared by more than 15 ethnically diverse Great Falls restaurants, fine art and live music.

Taste tickets -- $10 for 10 tickets at the gate or $8 for 10 tickets in advance -- are available at participating restaurants. They include Blue Oasis Cafe, L'Auberge Chez Francois, Dante's Italian Ristorante, Deli Italiano, Fiore Di Luna, Gillette's, Grand Appetite, Great Falls Tavern, King Creole Catering, Marcello's, Mediterranean Cafe, Old Brogue Irish Pub, Romantica, Serbian Crown, A La Belle Cuisine Catering and Wired Monkey Cafe.

Juilliard Jazz Opens Concert Series

The Alden Theatre will begin its 2004-05 "A+ Performance Series" with a concert by the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. Oct. 9.

The ensemble consists of eight students from the Julliard School who combine traditional jazz standards with innovative new compositions.

Tickets are $18 for McLean area residents, $16 for McLean area students and seniors, and $22 for others. Tickets are on sale at the box office or through Ticketmaster, 703-573-SEAT.
