The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, a week or on a regular basis.

The National Capital Area Affiliate of Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization needs volunteer community outreach facilitators. Participants will be trained to present one-hour seminars on breast cancer awareness, healthy lifestyle choices and the three steps to earlier detection of breast cancer. Fairfax County's Department of Family Services, Child Abuse Prevention Services needs men 21 or older for its "BeFriend-a-Child" mentoring program. Volunteers will go on one-to-one outings and participate in group activities such as sports, projects, trips to museums and parties. Screening, training and coaching are provided. The Inova Heart and Vascular Institute at Inova Fairfax Hospital needs volunteers to help patients, visitors and hospital staff. The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-Mile Walk needs volunteers to help with registration, refreshments, decorations, cheerleading, setup and more. Dumbarton House, a Federal-period historic house museum in Georgetown, needs volunteer docents to provide tours to visitors. Training sessions begin next month. For more information, call 202-337-2288, Ext. 222.

AARP Tax-Aide, a free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, needs people to help taxpayers complete their 2004 federal and state income tax forms. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Tax counselors receive free training and become IRS certified after passing an examination.
