Chesapeake Children's Museum needs docents to work two-hour shifts weekdays or three-hour shifts every other weekend. Volunteers also are needed to coordinate publicity, repair costumes and puppets, weed and water the gardens and plan and maintain the museum's hands-on exhibits. HIV/AIDS Volunteer Enrichment Network (HAVEN) seeks volunteers to take patients to doctor's appointments and support group meetings and to provide companionship. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary in Lothian needs volunteers 12 and older to help catch, identify, measure and then release fish in the River Farm area from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday as part of a continuing survey monitoring fish populations in shallow water and wetlands. A water chemistry and nutrient dynamics training workshop will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 for new and experienced adult and teen volunteers who help monitor nutrient pollution, dissolved oxygen levels, pH and water clarity in Jug Bay's waters. Opportunity Builders provides vocational training and employment services to adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteer instructional aides 18 and older help clients meet production quotas and learn work skills and techniques. Volunteer individuals or groups also conduct job interviews, teach computer classes, assist with special events, help with painting and maintenance projects, serve on committees and more. South County Assistance Network (SoCan), which helps people with emergency needs through a food pantry and other services, needs volunteers from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays and Saturdays to stock shelves and bag food. Special Olympics-Anne Arundel County offers free training for disabled athletes in sports including tennis, powerlifting, golf, soccer and more. Volunteers 16 and older are needed as coaches in the evenings and to assist with special events, regional competitions, fundraising and more. Volunteers are specifically needed for the fourth annual 5K Halloween Run and Kids Fun Run at 9 a.m. Oct. 24 that starts at the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center at 108 Forbes St. in West Annapolis. TEAM DNR (Teaching Environmental Awareness in Maryland) is a volunteer program organized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Volunteers 18 and older are needed for the 2004-05 school year to deliver hands-on presentations about Chesapeake Bay issues to elementary and middle school students in the region. Required training will be provided. Volunteers must have some daytime availability and personal transportation during the school year. Fall training workshops about watersheds and horseshoe crabs will be held Oct. 7 at Kings Landing Park in Calvert County, Oct. 14 at Marshy Point Nature Center in Baltimore County and Oct. 18 at Assateague State Park in Worcester County. Women for Afghan Women advocates for women and children in Afghanistan and raises money for projects to ensure their human rights. Volunteers 18 and older are needed to help with mailings.
