Women's Cinema

Anne Arundel Community College's Women's Institute will show "Filming Desire (A Journey Through Women's Cinema)" at 12:30 p.m. today. The hour-long documentary, directed by Marie Mandy, features filmmakers Sally Potter, Agnes Varda, Catherine Breillat, Doris Dorrie, Deepa Mehta, Moufida Tlatli, Safi Faye and Jane Campion discussing the use of love, desire and sexuality in contemporary cinema. Created in 2000, the film tackles issues of body image, power and feminism. Part of the college's Women's Institute film series. Arts Marketplace

Furniture, contemporary ceramic art, wood carvings, jewelry and handmade quilts will be on display during the Academy Art Museum's annual Arts Marketplace. The event kicks off tomorrow with a preview party that includes hors d'oeuvres and an open bar. Tickets for the preview party are $50, and all proceeds support the Academy Art Museum's educational outreach programs. The marketplace opens at 10 a.m. Saturday and includes acoustic guitar by Bruce Anthony and Bill Belcher on the front lawn of the museum. More than 50 artists will display and sell their wares at the museum through Sunday. Food vendors will sell everything from pit beef sandwiches to coffee and pastries. Pick a Pumpkin

Enjoy pumpkin carving and decorating, games, baked goods, face painting, stories and pumpkin picking at the Friends of Lighthouse Shelter and the Annapolis Area Ministries pumpkin patch. The patch opens Saturday and will remain open daily through Oct. 31. The Friends of Lighthouse Shelter (the fundraising arm for the Annapolis-based Lighthouse homeless shelter) and the Annapolis Area Ministries (an organization that provides shelter for and ministers to the county's homeless population) are accepting donations of canned goods.
