Budget Focus of Meeting
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public hearing and work session on the fiscal 2006 capital budget and the fiscal 2007-11 capital improvement program at 7:30 p.m. today in the Department of Education board room, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.
Those who want to testify will be limited to three-minute presentations and should provide 15 written copies of their testimony at the meeting.
In addition, residents can speak on topics for which no formal public hearings are expected at next Thursday's meetings, at 4 and 7:30 p.m. To sign up to speak at the meetings, call 410-313-7197.
Board Candidates Forum
A public forum featuring the Board of Education candidates will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Department of Education board room, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.
The candidates -- Frank Aquino, Diane Mikulis and Mary Kay Sigaty -- will make statements and then answer questions from the audience. The forum is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Howard County and the PTA Council of Howard County.
Korean Education Seminar
The fifth annual Korean Parents' Education Seminar will feature four workshops for parents.
The workshops are on understanding English for Speakers of Other Languages, strategic educational planning, the gifted and talented program and the SAT. School documents translated into Korean, including the 2004-05 school calendar, will be distributed.
The event also will feature Howard County Schools Superintendent Sydney L. Cousin and Kiwon Jang, education counselor from the Korean Embassy.
The free seminar will be from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. Monday at Mount Hebron High School, 9440 Route 99, Ellicott City.
Panel on Refugees
Atholton and Wilde Lake high schools are hosting a panel discussion for high school students about the relationship between refugees and the United States.
Speakers from political and non-political groups, including Amnesty International, will lead the discussion from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Slayton House in the Wilde Lake Village Center, 10451 Twin Rivers Rd., Columbia.
The free event includes lunch.
College Fair Is Oct. 17
Representatives from more than 150 colleges, universities and technical schools nationwide will be available at the annual Howard County College Fair, from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 at Atholton High School, 6520 Freetown Rd., Columbia.
Two sessions on financial aid will be offered, at 2 and 3 p.m. For more information, call 410-313-7068.
