Next month, Montgomery County voters will decide key issues affecting the power of the County Council to levy taxes, how the council should be structured and how long its members and the county executive should stay in office.
The ballot poses three questions. Question A: Should the County Council lose its authority, by a vote of at least seven of nine members, to override the charter limit on property taxes? Question B: Should the county executive and council members be limited to serving three consecutive four-year terms in office? Question C: Should all nine council members be elected from districts, instead of the current four at-large and five single-member districts?
In today's Extra, community leaders and elected officials offer their opposing views on the issues.
Opponents and supporters of the issues also will gather at 7:30 p.m. today to debate the initiatives. The event will be held in the third-floor hearing room of the Stella Werner Office Building, 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville. It is free and open to the public.
The debate will be broadcast live by County Cable Montgomery's Channel 6 and rebroadcast at later times on Channel 6 and Channel 21. In addition, Comcast will make the debate available through its digital On Demand service.
