The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, a week or on a regular basis.

The American Councils for International Education need volunteers to evaluate scholarship applications of students from the republics of the former Soviet Union. The Future Leaders Exchange program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, will bring 1,200 students to the United States to spend a year living with an American family and attending a high school. Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia needs volunteers to help in its new "ReStore" on Richmond Highway (Route 1) in the Alexandria area. Discounted new and used building and home improvement materials that have been donated by local retail businesses, building contractors, suppliers and individuals will be on sale to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia. Volunteers must be at least 16 and are needed 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday to help pick up and receive donations, answer phones, stock shelves, greet customers and be cashiers. The Reston Association needs volunteers for its annual Halloween trail 5:30-9:30 p.m. Oct. 27-29 at the Walker Nature Education Center. The association needs trail guide assistants, costumed characters, make-up artists and assistance with food sales, staging, setup and cleanup. Volunteers must be 16 or older. The association also needs volunteers 10 a.m.-noon Saturday for the Glade Stream Valley Weed Warriors Project. Volunteers, who must be 14 or older, will clear out invasive exotic plants that attack native ferns, wildflowers and tree seedlings in the Glade Stream Valley. The Reston Museum needs volunteers to serve as docents. Training classes will be held 7-9 p.m. today and Nov. 18 at the Reston Museum, Lake Anne Village Center. For more information, call 703-709-7700.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts, a museum in downtown Washington that features art by women, needs volunteer docents to provide tours for visitors. Training will begin next month. For more information, call 202-783-7996.

AARP Tax-Aide, a free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, needs volunteers to help taxpayers complete their 2004 federal and state income tax forms. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Tax counselors receive free tax training and become IRS certified after passing an examination.
