A woman was shot and killed last night among the graves and tombstones of a cemetery in Prince George's County, police said. A second woman was wounded in the attack.
About 45 minutes later, a woman who was at a bus stop less than three miles away in eastern Montgomery County was shot and fatally wounded, and authorities said they were looking into the possibility that the killings were related.
The shootings in the cemetery came in a year marked by an increase in homicides in Prince George's County. Authorities indicated that the site of last night's killing was unusual.
It happened about 7:45 p.m. in the George Washington Cemetery in the 9500 block of Riggs Road in the Adelphi area. Police said the killing came to light when the woman who had been wounded walked into the cemetery office to ask for help.
The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Police found the slain woman among the graves, within a half-mile of the cemetery office.
A county police spokeswoman, Cpl. Diane Richardson, said police were looking into the possibility that the shootings at the cemetery were gang-related.
She said police did not know what the two women were doing in the cemetery or how they got there.
The fatal shooting in the Silver Spring area of Montgomery County occurred in the 8500 block of Piney Branch Road, on a busy strip lined with stores and businesses.
Someone in one of the stores said he heard two gunshots a few minutes before 9 p.m. People flocked to the scene, watching rescue workers minister to the victim.
Although witnesses said the woman was at a bus stop, police said it was not clear whether she had been waiting for a bus.
She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Initial reports indicated that she had been shot in the head, possibly by a man who approached on foot, opened fire and fled.
