What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"The pressing issue facing Arlington is the erosion of affordable housing. The county has used bonus density, contribution guidelines for site plan developments and other tools, but it is difficult to stem the tide. This past year, Arlington adopted the most aggressive on-site affordable guidelines to date. We now have an obligation to work with all sectors of the community to make these guidelines a reality. If Arlington is to remain a diverse and inclusive community, it is vital that households making less than the median income of $85,000 per year be able to find housing in the county."

Why should voters elect you?

"Under my leadership, we gained 28 acres of open space, aggressive affordable housing guidelines and a permanent home for Head Start. I've earned your vote."

F. Landey Patton IV (R)

Age: 64

Residence: Lee Heights.

Education: BA, history, Princeton University; completed graduate work, Wheaton College Graduate School of Theology.

Occupation: Realtor, Long & Foster Real Estate.

Elected offices/civic activities: None given.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"Arlington's most pressing problem is an entrenched political establishment that is increasingly controlling and out of touch with the community of people who provide the revenues for county government. Residential real estate taxes have increased 85 percent in the last five years, and there is no end in sight to reckless spending initiatives. Most thoughtful people will acknowledge that one-party rule over a long period of time is rarely beneficial to the citizens of the community, as complacency and subtle arrogance gradually undermines meaningful debate."

Why should voters elect you?

"My business experience and strong commitment to my faith, family and friends should provide a fresh perspective on the Arlington County Board."
