Airline to Install New Technology

Independence Air has hired Stratus Technologies of Maynard, Mass., to install new computer servers at Dulles International Airport to run its schedule of flights and crews. The technology has a backup system that keeps the server running if the main one fails. The cost of the system is about $30,000, said Ken Donoghue, a spokesman for Stratus Technologies.

Chamber Appointments

The Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce has appointed Robert "Bob" Steere as chief operations officer and Lana Heaslip as executive director of membership.

Steere will oversee the chamber's day-to-day operations, including finance, personnel, sales and technology. Heaslip will manage membership activities, including recruitment and retention of members and member marketing efforts.

Steere has more than 20 years of experience in business development, operations management and marketing. For the past five years, he has worked in the United States and Britain in nonprofit organizations and in the transportation, health insurance and technology consulting industries.

Heaslip has been the chamber's member care specialist and acting membership director for two years.

The chamber of commerce will hold a networking breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. next Thursday followed by an orientation for new members from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Belmont Country Club, 19661 Belmont Manor Lane, Ashburn. $15 in advance for members; $18 for members at the door; and $20 for non-members. Promotion at Valador

John Bacak of South Riding has been promoted to vice president and chief financial officer of Herndon-based Valador Inc., an information architecture firm.

Steakhouse to Open in Ashburn

The Original Steakhouse & Sports Theatre, a restaurant chain with outlets in Florida, Maryland and North Carolina, was scheduled to open Tuesday in the Broadlands Center in Ashburn. The 200-seat casual restaurant, at 3150 Broadlands Center, Building E, will have a sports atmosphere and large television viewing area.

Small-Business Seminars

The Loudoun County Small Business Development Center will hold a "Start Your Business" presentation Monday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Caroline Mansi, a small-business specialist, will lead participants through the essential steps for starting a successful small business. Terry Corle, a marketing and insurance specialist, will give 21 marketing tips and discuss what types of insurance are needed for small businesses. Highlights of the seminar will include: taxes, licensing, accounting and record keeping, business-plan development, sources of financing, marketing and insurance. A discussion period will follow the presentation. Rust Library, 380 Old Waterford Rd. NW, Leesburg.

On Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the center will hold a seminar, "Magnetize Your Website: How to Attract the Right Traffic to Your Website," presented by Sally and Ray Strackbein, owners of Connection Experts. The local company specializes in helping businesses use the Internet to establish credibility and gain more business. The Strackbeins will discuss how to avoid expensive Web site mistakes, help people find your Web site, get good search engine placement, write content for the Web and build and maintain your own Web site. The Lord Fairfax Small Business Development Center in Fauquier County is offering the following seminars for small-business owners:

* "Writing a Business Plan," from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, will explain what to include in a business plan and where to get the information.

Registration for this seminar includes free admission to the Nov. 16 seminar.

* "Financial Data for Business Plans," 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 16, will assist you in providing the financial data required on your plan. It is not necessary to attend "Writing a Business Plan" to attend this seminar.
