Guiding Eye for the Blind needs volunteers to care for Labrador retriever puppies until they are old enough to be professionally trained as guide dogs. Volunteers must provide love and affection, behavior training and socialization experiences and include the guide dog puppy in family activities for its first 14 to 16 months of life. The Assistance League of Northern Virginia, a nonprofit, nonsectarian, volunteer service organization, will hold a membership meeting 10:15 a.m.-noon Nov. 15 at Chantilly Regional Library, 4000 Stringfellow Rd. Lake Anne Elementary School in Reston needs volunteers for its STAR (Start Thinking and Read) program. Volunteers will tutor students one-on-one in reading on Wednesday mornings over the course of the school year. Volunteers may select the child's grade level (K-5) or age. The Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna needs volunteers to provide services to homebound older adults, including transportation to medical appointments, companion shopping services, friendly callers and visitors, handy helpers and financial record-keeping assistance. Annandale Christian Community for Action needs volunteers to help with its holiday food baskets for needy families. Volunteers can sponsor a family to provide a food basket, help pack and deliver food from the food pantry or donate money to purchase food certificates.
