Counselor to Speak at Academy

The third annual Parent Academy, sponsored by the Howard County Gifted and Talented Education Program, will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. next Thursday at Oakland Mills High School, 9410 Kilimanjaro Rd., Columbia.

The program, "The Pride and Achievement: Meeting the Social and Emotional Needs of Advanced-Level Learners," will be presented by Andrew Mahoney, a licensed counselor and family therapist. He will discuss realistic goal setting, motivations, values, perfectionism and underachievement.

Exchange Student Information

The Columbia Association is accepting applications for its sister city exchange program, which is open to high school students living in Howard County.

Participants will spend about two weeks during summer in Cergy-Pontoise, France, or Tres Cantos, Spain, hosted by the family of a French or Spanish student.

Upon returning home, students will host their French or Spanish counterparts for two weeks. Organized group activities will be provided during the program.

Applicants must have completed high school level two of French or Spanish by the end of this academic year or have the equivalent language proficiency.

The cost is approximately $1,300 and includes airfare, food, lodging and activities. The deadline for applications is Feb. 18. For more information, contact Meredith Jaffe, manager of the sister cities program, at 410-715-3162 or sistercities@columbiaassociation.com.

Special Education Program

A program on how special education students can successfully move on from high school will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Rd., Columbia.

Sponsored by the Howard County schools Office of Special Education, the meeting will include funding, postsecondary schooling, vocational programs, day and residential programs, recreation and transportation. Representatives from adult service providers, the Community College of Baltimore County, Howard Community College and Project Access will be available.
