The Literacy Council of Montgomery County needs volunteers to teach adults to read, write and speak English. You do not need to know a foreign language. Hours are flexible. Rock Creek Watershed Citizens Group seeks volunteers to form a community organization that will protect and restore the Rock Creek watershed in Montgomery County and Washington. Initial meetings that will focus on how residents can form a "Friends of Rock Creek" group will take place Nov. 13 at Redland Middle School, 6505 Muncaster Mill Rd., Rockville, and Nov. 20 at the Audubon Naturalist Society's Woodend Sanctuary, 8940 Jones Mill Rd., Chevy Chase. The Montgomery County Board of Education seeks applicants for the District 5 seat in eastern Montgomery County to complete the remaining two years of the position's current term. Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan is seeking applicants for the following vacancies:

The Commission on Aging has 11 vacancies for resident representatives (seniors and non-seniors encouraged to apply) for three-year terms without compensation. Meetings are held from 9:15 a.m. to noon on the fourth Thursday of each month at Holiday Park Senior Center in Wheaton.

The Solid Waste Advisory Committee has six vacancies to be filled by representatives from the solid-waste industry, business users and the general public. Members serve three-year terms without compensation and meet the first Tuesday evening of each month in Rockville.

The Rustic Roads Advisory Committee has two vacancies for resident owner-operators of commercial farmland who earn 50 percent or more of their income from farming. Members serve three years without compensation. Meetings are held at least six times a year, usually the second Thursday evening of the month.
