Substance Abuse Talk

A parents-only talk on teaching youths to resist peer pressure to use alcohol and drugs will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Clarksville Middle School, 6535 Trotter Rd., Clarksville. The guest speaker will be Mike Gimbel, director of Sheppard Pratt Substance Abuse Education and Prevention Services, who will discuss how to talk to teenagers about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and other dangerous substances.

School Board Forums

Public forums will be held at the beginning of the 4 and 7:30 p.m. sessions of the Board of Education when it meets Tuesday. Residents will have the opportunity to discuss topics outside of the formal public hearing process. The meeting takes place in the board room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City. To speak at either session, call 410-313-7197.

Program for Parents

The River Hill High School PTSA will host a program for parents, "Limits, Logic and Love," from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Information Center at the school, 12101 Route 108, Clarksville. The event will discuss how to build a teenager's sense of responsibility by setting limits. It will also teach parents about what role they should and should not play. The program will be led by Amy Ferrell, who has developed the "Parenting With Purpose" curriculum and has taught in Howard County for eight years.

Tiny Tots Concert

The River Hill High School Music Department will present its annual Tiny Tots Concert at 10 a.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the school's auditorium. Highlights will include introductions to musical instruments and appearances by Rudolph, Frosty and Santa's elves. Admission is $3. Each adult accompanying 10 children will be admitted free.
