Brookside Gardens in Wheaton needs volunteers for many roles: butterfly show helpers, docents, tour guides, children's guides, house gardeners, gardener's assistants, turf mowers, integrated pest management scouts, and information desk and gift shop assistants. Metropolitan Washington Ear needs volunteer readers to record newspapers and magazines for free telephone access by the visually and physically impaired. Volunteers are asked to read at least two hours a week, Monday through Friday, or two hours every other week on Saturday or Sunday. An audition is required. The Volunteer Mentoring Project of the Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission's Family Self-Sufficiency Program seeks mentors. Volunteers help low-income adult residents move toward economic self-sufficiency, guiding and motivating them as they develop job skills through education and training. Mentors must be at least 25 and able to commit to four hours a month for one year. The program's staff members provide mentor training and ongoing supervision. Call 301-929-5660.
