Sexual Assault in Home A Fort Hunt area woman in her sixties was sexually assaulted in her home Thursday afternoon, and an independent carpet cleaner was arrested and charged, Fairfax County police said.

Police said John T. Valverde, 36, of the 4900 block of Americana Drive in Annandale, was arrested about 9:30 p.m. Thursday and was charged with sexual assault, simple assault and indecent exposure.

Richmond Slayings Motive Richmond police said yesterday that they were trying to find a motive in three killings that occurred within 15 minutes of each other Wednesday night.

On Thursday, police arrested Daniel Bowler, 26, in the slayings of three men in the city's Southside section. Authorities said they believed Bowler knew the victims and might have targeted them for revenge. Two victims were robbed, but authorities said robbery did not appear to be the primary motive.

Dragging Arrest An Arlington County man has been arrested and charged in an incident in which a Fairfax County police officer was dragged by an SUV last month in Merrifield.

Police said the dragging occurred May 21 after officers tried to question a driver in the 8100 block of Lee Highway.

Police said Stacy Darrell Smith, 31, of the 1300 block of North Jackson Street, was arrested Thursday in Centreville and charged with malicious injury to a police officer, disregarding an officer's order and hit-and-run.

Arrest in Machete Attack A 17-year-old Springfield area resident has been arrested in a machete attack in Springfield that appeared to be gang-related, Fairfax County police said yesterday.

The attack occurred Sunday night in the 6100 block of Augusta Drive, when a group of seven men flashing gang hand signals and yelling "MS" -- short for the gang Mara Salvatrucha -- chased and assaulted an 18-year-old Springfield man, striking him in the hand and head with machetes and causing "extensive injury," police said.

The 17-year-old was arrested Thursday and charged with malicious wounding and gang participation, police said. His name was withheld because of his age.


Teacher Arrested A health and gym teacher at a private school in Silver Spring was arrested yesterday in connection with a March incident in which a student was touched inappropriately, Montgomery County police said.

Shedrick Adrian Young, 33, of the 11000 block of Lake Arbor Way in Mitchellville, who teaches learning disabled students at the Chelsea school, was charged with child abuse and fourth-degree sex offense, police said.
