Athlete of the Year
Corryl Boyd, Westlake, Soph.
The All-Extra athlete of the year for indoor track continued his rise during the outdoor season. Boyd won two 3A state championships -- the long jump and 400-meter dash -- and finished second in the 200. He finished the outdoor season as the Washington area's leader in both the triple jump (47 feet 31/4 inches at the 3A South Region meet) and the long jump (23-101/2).
Coach of the Year
Beth Shook, Westlake
Led a deep but largely inexperienced Wolverines team to the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference title. The squad -- with one major senior contributor and a large core of freshmen -- scored 125 points, almost 40 points better than any other team. In the regional meet, the Wolverines were even more dominant, scoring 146 points to Northern's second-place 72. Westlake finished third in the state.
David Anderson, La Plata, Sr.
At the 3A South Region championships, Anderson pulled off first places in a difficult triple: the 800 (1 minute 58.9 seconds), 1,600 (4:28.2) and 3,200 (9:55.9).
Rashaad Guy, Westlake, Sr.
Finished second in the 3A South Region in the 300-meter hurdles. He was the SMAC champion in the 100 hurdles and took fourth in the SMAC in the 300 hurdles.
Kenard Harris, Westlake, Fr.
One of the Wolverines' top sprinters, Harris was sixth in the SMAC in the 100 and seventh in the 200. Finished seventh in 3A in the 100 and sixth in the 200.
Gabe Loube, Patuxent, Sr.
Loube was Southern Maryland's best short sprinter, winning the SMAC titles in the 100 and 200. Qualified for the 4A state finals in the 100 and 200.
Collin Leadbeter, Northern, Fr.
Leadbeter was the 3A South Region runner-up in the 1,600 and 3,200. At the SMAC meet, the Patriots freshman was fourth in the 3,200 meters and fifth in the 1,600.
Ricky Moore, Northern, Sr.
Moore was the 4A champion in the shot put, making a throw of 54 feet 11 inches, which was the second best throw by anyone in Maryland this year.
J.B. Walton, Lackey, Jr.
The All-Extra football player was All-State in track and field, taking third in 3A in the discus (140 feet 6). He finished third in the SMAC in the discus.
