Athletes of the Year

ALISON CANFIELD, Broadneck, Soph.

Canfield swept first place in every event at the Anne Arundel County meet, winning the all-around (34.125) and leading the team to its third straight championship. She also scored tops in the all-around among county gymnasts at the Maryland state meet.

ANDREW PODOLIN, Broadneck, Sr.

All-County in each of his four seasons and gymnast of the year for three, Podolin won every event in which he competed in the all-around in each of the past four years. This year, he set his career-high score twice, topping out at 53.7 (out of 60.0).

Coach of the Year

SCOT SHAFFER, Severna Park

The sixth-year coach led the Falcons to their first boys' championship, ending Old Mill's string of two straight championships and undefeated seasons. Shaffer's girls' team succeeded as well, finishing second at the county meet.

Girls' First Team

JOANNE AMOS, Broadneck, Soph.

A repeat All-County gymnast, Amos finished third in the all-around at the county meet (31.6) and was close behind teammate Canfield in the all-around at states.

LIANA FLY, Old Mill, Jr.

A steady gymnast, Fly advanced in the all-around to states and helped Old Mill to a third-place finish at the county meet.

JACKIE KINSELLA, Severna Park, Soph.

Kinsella, a repeat All-County athlete, took second place in the all-around at the county meet (32.2) and scored tops among county gymnasts at the state meet in the vault and floor.

MARY PUTNAM, Chesapeake, Jr.

A two-time All-County selection, Putnam qualified for the state meet in three events, scoring highest in the vault (7.975).


The high-scorer for the Patriots, Ripley finished fourth at counties in the all-around and fourth at states among county gymnasts.

Boys' First Team

TAYLOR ADAMS, Annapolis, Soph.

The high scorer at the county meet on a resurgent Panthers team, Adams placed in two events at counties in leading Annapolis to a second-place team finish.

CHAD GRANOFSKY, Chesapeake, Sr.

A three-time All-County gymnast, Granofsky finished third in the all-around at counties (42.45) and placed in the top four in three events.

KYLE REGAN, Broadneck, Soph.

A repeat All-County athlete, Regan has finished second in every meet in which he has competed dating from his freshman season; he scored his career high in the county meet (52.2).

MICHAEL PALIEN, Severna Park, Sr.

A team -leader on a championship squad, Palien finished fifth in the all-around at the county meet (41.0) and placed fourth on the parallel bars and high bar.


The team leader on Old Mill's squad, Wilson finished fourth in the all-around at counties, buoyed by a tie for third place on the floor (8.6).
