The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.

The SPCA of Northern Virginia needs foster homes for dogs and cats. The SPCA does not have a shelter and depends on foster homes for animals that have been rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. For more information, call 703-799-9390 or visit www.spcanova.org.

World Heritage needs families to host high school students from France, Germany, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Norway, Brazil, Russia, China, Switzerland, Denmark and Italy for the 2005-06 school year. Host families provide room, board and guidance to the students. Couples, single parents and families with or without children at home are encouraged to apply. The U.S. Botanic Garden, at 100 Maryland Ave. in Southwest Washington, needs volunteers for visitor information services, children's activities and discovery carts. Orientation and training are provided. Visitor information volunteers work at the information desk and tell the public about the garden and surrounding sites. Children's activities volunteers lead hands-on programs in the outdoor garden during growing season; discovery cart volunteers share plant stories and information with visitors.
