Coach of the Year

Guided the Lightning to its second county title in his first year back coaching track after a nine-year break. He coached the boys' and girls' teams at Hammond from 1986 to 1996.

Hughes, also the Long Reach football coach, turned the Lightning into the county's best team by persuading standout athletes in other sports -- including basketball player Darryl Webb and football player Eugene Lightfoot -- to join the track team. The effort gave the track team new depth, and the Lightning scored in 13 of the 18 events at the county championships to hold off Centennial, 95-92.

"We didn't have a lot of boys who had experience running track, but we had a lot of great athletes that were very quick learners," Hughes said. "It was nice to bring the county title back to Long Reach."
