Birthplace and date: Sidney, N.Y.; Feb. 10, 1966.
Marital status: Married to Cassie.
Children: Two girls -- Lindsay, 8, and Sydney, 6.
College: The College of William and Mary.
Pet: Zak, a black Labrador retriever.
Celebrity I most resemble: Clark Kent.
My most notable characteristic or personality trait: Common sense colored with competitiveness.
I'd love to trade places for a day with: A cowboy.
Nobody knows I: If no one knows it yet, I'm certainly not going to tell everyone here!
Favorite quote: "Timshel -- Thou mayest." "But the Hebrew word timshel -- 'Thou mayest' -- that gives a choice. For if 'Thou mayest,' it is also true that 'Thou mayest not.' That makes a man great and that gives him stature with the gods, for in his weakness and his filth and his murder of his brother he has still the great choice. He can choose his course and fight it through and win."
-- Adam Trask's Chinese servant, Lee, from "East of Eden."
Best movie I've ever seen: "Hoosiers." An underdog story and basketball -- what's not to love?
Best book I've ever read: "East of Eden," by John Steinbeck.
All-time favorite TV show: "M*A*S*H." In fact, "Hawkeye Pierce" was always my default Halloween costume -- I'd put on my Army boots and dog tags, shorts and a bathrobe, and I was set for the evening.
Restaurant in my district where my constituents would most likely run into me: Bassett's in Poolesville. A comfortable, family-friendly place with great food; it's a success every time -- everyone goes home happy.
My favorite restaurant outside my district: Los Cuates in Albuquerque.
Birthday cake: Any flavor my daughters bake in their Easy-Bake oven.
Car I drive: Nissan Altima.
Best car I've ever had: An orange 1972 Volkswagen Beetle. I drove it throughout college and most notably took it on a 9,000-mile, 31/2-week cross-country journey across the United States. It could go anywhere and I could fix it. The only downside was that it never exceeded 20 mph while climbing the Rockies.
Politician I most admire: Daniel Patrick Moynihan. An unapologetic advocate for big dreams tempered with a dash of common sense, he was amazing to watch and listen to -- and he could give a great speech without notes. I had the pleasure of interning for him right out of college, and it was an experience I'll never forget.
Favorite president: It may sound hokey, but George Washington. He was a man guided by decency, honor and common sense, not to mention by an absolutely dead-on political awareness. The more I learn of him, the more impressed I become.
Person in history I would most want to meet: Galileo. Smart, uncompromising and enormously talented.
Most important influence in my life: Pete Domenici [U.S. Sen. Pete V. Domenici, R-N.M.], J. Craig Venter [human genome scientist] and [Duke University basketball coach] Mike Krzyzewski.
Favorite place to vacation: The Outer Banks.
Most interesting place I've ever visited: Australia.
Pet peeve: People who are opposed to ideas and don't provide any alternative solutions.
Impression people have of me that I would most like to change: That I'm a typical middle-class, middle-aged white guy from the suburbs.
Impression people have of Montgomery County that I would most like to change: That we're a mostly affluent, mostly white, mostly suburban community that doesn't look like the rest of Maryland. I want people to know that we are enormously diverse, with many urban, suburban and rural communities, and the Ag Reserve -- and that I can walk and hike within minutes of my house.
