Owner Cited for Dog Left in Car
ROCKVILLE, Bauer Dr., 1 to 100 block, June 8. Responding to a call about a dog locked inside a vehicle in a shopping center parking lot, an animal services officer found an elderly Australian shepherd panting heavily in at least 90-degree heat. Just able to fit his arm in through the window opening, the officer was able to unlock the door. He posted a notice on the vehicle windshield and took the dog to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. About 30 minutes later, the dog's upset owner called. He was able to reclaim his dog but only after meeting with the officer, who issued him a $500 citation for animal cruelty.
Fake Fowl No Cause for Alarm
SILVER SPRING, Fenton St., 8200 block, June 9. In response to a call about a turkey and what possibly was a monkey on the roof of a restaurant, an officer found two plastic birds, a turkey and an owl that apparently had been placed on the roof to deter other birds from landing or nesting there. No further action was required.
Mom, Roadside Brood Rescued
SILVER SPRING, Glenallan Ave., 1 to 100 block, June 10. A motorist called animal services to report a mother dog and six puppies by the side of a road. The mother, an Australian shepherd mix, was timid and proved difficult to catch. The animal services officer baited a humane trap with a can of food and put the puppies in an open cage, with blanket, nearby. Within a few minutes, the mother entered the trap. After a search of the woods turned up no other puppies, the family was taken to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. They were to be held pending an ownership claim for six days, then placed for adoption.
