Martha A. Smith, president of Anne Arundel Community College, was recently appointed by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) to the Maryland Education Council for a term set to expire in 2007. Smith, a resident of Glen Burnie, is in her 11th year as president of the college. As a member of the council, she will represent Maryland on the Education Commission of the States, a national organization. The commission seeks to improve public education through the exchange of information, ideas and experiences among state policymakers and education leaders.

Eric W. Fons, an Annapolis resident and a physics professor at Anne Arundel Community College, will appear this year in "Who's Who Among American Teachers," marking the third time he has been included in the publication, which will publish its ninth edition this fall. Only 5 percent of the nation's teachers are honored in each edition, and only 2 percent have appeared more than once.

Reva B. Press was recently named the new program manager for dental health for the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. Press, a resident of Silver Spring, also serves as chief of dental services for the District of Columbia Air National Guard in Camp Springs, where she is the principal adviser on all dental issues for 1,300 military personnel.
