Town Hall Meeting Tonight

The County Council will hold a town hall meeting tonight for residents of eastern Montgomery and the Route 29 area.

It will be held at the Performance Hall of the Riderwood Village retirement community, 3140 Gracefield Rd. in Silver Spring. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting to follow at 7.

The meeting will be televised at a later date on County Cable Montgomery's Channel 6.

"This will be an excellent opportunity for people to have their say and put their questions directly to members of the County Council," council President Tom Perez (D-Silver Spring) said in a statement. "We'll be discussing the county budget and taxes, senior issues, education and transportation, development and public safety -- and whatever else residents want to talk about."

Free Taxi Rides

Free taxicab rides will be offered over the July 4 holiday to help keep roads safe from drunken drivers.

The SoberRide program will operate from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. on both Sunday and Monday. Area residents can call 800-200-TAXI for a free ride home, up to a $50 fare.

According to Kurt Gregory Erickson, executive director of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, which sponsors the service, the July 4 holiday ranks as the deadliest where drunken driving is concerned.

In 2003, more people were killed across the country by drunken drivers on July 4 than during the New Year's holiday and on St. Patrick's Day and Super Bowl Sunday combined, he said.
