Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) needs volunteers to be advocates for children whose families have been cited for abuse and neglect by the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Special advocates investigate a child's situation and advocate the best interests of the child in court. Training is provided, and no experience in child welfare is required. The Bargain Loft, a thrift store at 336 Victory Dr. in Herndon, needs summer volunteers. Profits from the store benefit Herndon-Reston FISH, which helps people with emergency needs such as rent, utilities and medicine. The store is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The Fairfax County Language Access Coordinator needs foreign- language speakers to review translated government documents for accuracy. Applicants must be able to work from a home computer and have a good command of written English and a target language. Three hours of verification-skills training are provided. Friends of the Fairfax County Victim Assistance Network needs volunteers for its board of directors to respond to voice-mail and e-mail messages to secure services for victims of sexual assault and domestic abuse. Computer skills are necessary. Other volunteer opportunities include political advocacy, publishing newsletters and delivering emergency cell phones. The Capital Hospice Point of Hope Wellness Center in Falls Church needs adult administrative volunteers to enter data and help index and categorize books.
