The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.

LEC, a Paris-based nonprofit cultural exchange program, needs Northern Virginia host families for two French students, a 13-year-old boy and a 19-year-old girl, Aug. 2-23. A host family provides room, board and friendship and will receive a weekly stipend. The students speak English, are fully insured and will have their own spending money. For more information, visit or call 800-421-7217.

Haven of Northern Virginia needs volunteers to provide emotional support to the bereaved, the seriously ill, the dying, and their families and friends. Volunteers must be available during weekdays and must commit to a minimum of 21/2 hours a week of telephone duty for at least one year. Volunteer orientation sessions will be held Aug. 10, 17, 22 and Sept. 1. A 30-hour training course will be held in September. For more information, call 703-941-7000 or visit

Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates needs volunteers to represent children whose families have been cited for abuse and neglect by the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Volunteers investigate a child's situation and advocate in court for what is in the best interest of the child. Training is provided, and no previous experience in child welfare is required. For more information, visit or call 703-273-3526.

The SPCA of Northern Virginia needs foster homes for dogs and cats. The organization does not have a shelter and depends on foster homes for animals that have been rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. For more information, call 703-799-9390 or visit

The Virginia Indian Festival on Sept. 10 at Riverbend Park needs volunteers to park cars and work as runners and food sales assistants. The festival is an old-fashioned powwow that teaches school-age children and their parents how Native Americans lived. To volunteer or for more information, call 703-759-1627.
