D.C. police arrested a man yesterday in connection with a robbery in Prince George's County that investigators believe is linked to a string of violent holdups this week.
Steve Donnell Waytes, 21, is charged with one count of armed robbery and is being questioned about three other robberies that took place early Monday in Prince George's and ended in two men's deaths.
Waytes was arrested in the 4300 block of Ponds Street NE. Prince George's police, working with D.C. police, identified Waytes as a suspect after a tip from the community, said Lt. Robert Nealon, commander of the Prince George's homicide unit.
Waytes, of Capitol Heights, is charged in a 6 a.m. stickup at a gas station in Fairmount Heights, in the 5100 block of Duel Place, where a 52-year-old man was robbed of his wallet. It was the third of what police believe were related crimes.
An hour earlier, construction worker Herminio Moscoso, 26, was fatally shot in Glenarden as he warmed up his car to take himself and his brother Edwin to work. About 15 minutes later, auto mechanic William Everette Miller, 46, was fatally shot in a robbery attempt in Landover.
A fourth robbery occurred on Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Capitol Heights; police believe the assailants were working their way south toward the District.
Prince George's police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for the arrest and indictment of suspects in this case. Those with information can call 301-772-4925.
