Wendi Portman is the new cantor at Shaare Tefila Congregation. She replaces Gershon E. Levin, who retired July 1 after 39 years of service. Originally from Bellaire, Tex., Portman received a master's degree in sacred music from the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. Portman's professional credentials include the leading of Shabbat and High Holy Day services at Temple Adath Yeshurun in Syracuse, N.Y., and teaching children in grades 3 through 12. Tikvat Israel Congregation has appointed Lynn Berk as its youth director. The Silver Spring resident held a preschool teaching position at the D.C. Jewish Community Center before serving as youth director and deputy director of lifelong learning at the Tifereth Israel Congregation in Northwest Washington.

At Tikvat Israel, Berk will involve young children and teens in experiential Jewish learning and foster their love for synagogue life and the Jewish community. The synagogue is at 2200 Baltimore Rd., Rockville.

Journey's Crossing, a newly formed Christian church, will hold its first services at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday. The worship will feature a live band, videos and relevant Bible teaching.
