The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, a week or on a regular basis.
Life With Cancer, an organization that provides information, support and education to people affected by cancer, offers a variety of opportunities. Volunteers are needed to be class instructors, class assistants and visiting volunteers and to work one on one with hospitalized patients, among other things. Haven of Northern Virginia needs volunteers to provide emotional support to the bereaved, the seriously ill, the dying, and their families and friends. Volunteers must be available weekdays and must commit to a minimum of 21/2 hours a week for telephone duty, for at least one year. One-day volunteer orientation sessions will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 22 and Sept. 1. A 30-hour training course will be held in September. The Naomi Project, a free, confidential, interfaith program sponsored by the Virginia Council of Churches, needs volunteers to serve as mentors to at-risk pregnant women and new mothers. Mentors provide encouragement, help clients learn about good health during pregnancy, locate needed information and services, model sound parenting skills and support their clients as they plan for the future.
