The Loudoun County Disability Services Board said it would award its Facilities Access and Management Excellence (FAME) Award to Wegmans for employing people with disabilities and accommodating customers with disabilities.

Wegmans has about 10 employees with disabilities at its Sterling store. It has three wide checkout lanes and two elevators that allow customers access to the upstairs cafe, where employees know to offer wheelchairs and assistance when needed. Outside the store, Wegmans has a helping-hands team whose members are available to help customers into the building and load groceries into vehicles. There also is a designated drive-up area for customers where employees wait with groceries and load vehicles.

Amanda Virts of the Loudoun County 4-H has been inducted into the Virginia Chapter of the 4-H All Stars, the highest recognition that a Virginia 4-H member can achieve. Virts, 17, of Leesburg, a rising senior at Loudoun Valley High School, is a member of the sheep, beef, swine and goat clubs, as well as the Loudoun County 4-H livestock judging team.

Donna Armani, who will teach chemistry at the new Briar Woods High School, was honored as the Outstanding Science Teacher of 2005 by the Health Physics Society, a nonprofit professional organization that promotes radiation safety.

The award included $750 to Briar Woods in Armani's name, honorary membership in the society, travel assistance to attend the awards ceremony and tickets for Armani and her husband to attend the society's annual conference July 12 in Spokane, Wash.

Armani also received the Top Industry Practice Award from the Nuclear Energy Institute in Washington in May for helping with teacher workshops on nuclear energy and radiation for several years. Armani was on the faculty at Broad Run High School.

Of the 2,383 students who graduated from Loudoun County public schools in June, 528 won scholarships or grants worth a total of $7.8 million:

Kristen Karinshak, 17, of Leesburg was one of five American teenagers to win the American Eagle Outfitters' Live Your Life contest. When she was 15, Karinshak organized a walk to raise money to build wells in Burkina Faso in West Africa. She raised $45,000 to build five wells for the Dagara people and wants to raise enough money so that a well will be within walking distance of every village in Burkina Faso. She will receive up to $25,000 for her program.
