Music Educator

Stanley Dent Jr., 59, former band director and music coordinator for Fauquier County schools, died of septicemia Aug. 4 at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Va. He had lived in Callao, Va. for the past three years.

Mr. Dent worked for the schools in Warrenton for 30 years, starting in 1972. In addition to teaching music and introducing students to band, he was an assistant softball coach for Warrenton Middle School and Fauquier High School.

He was born in Berryville, Va., and graduated from what is now Shepherd University in West Virginia. He taught for two years in that state, then moved to Warrenton. He received a master's degree in music education from Madison College in 1976 and a master's in school administration from George Mason University in 1984.

He was a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Hunter Sailing Association No. 8, Potomac Sailing Association, Northern Neck Sailing Association and Reedville Fisherman's Museum. He was known as a quiet man with a dry wit who enjoyed music.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Laura Dent of Callao; two daughters, Sara Dent of Midland, Va., and Lianne Dent of Callao; his mother, Elizabeth Dent of Mechanicsville; a sister, Susan Graves of Winchester, Va.; and two brothers, Thomas Dent of Mechanicsville and Brian Dent of Seattle.
