L'Academie de Cuisine will hold an open house for prospective students of culinary and pastry arts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Current students will prepare a buffet to showcase their skills. The new kitchens and classrooms at the recently expanded facility will be available for viewing.
The school, founded in 1976, offers career training as well as recreational classes at its Bethesda and Gaithersburg centers. Students also may enroll in part-time professional and continuing education classes. The open house will be held at the Gaithersburg venue, 16006 Industrial Dr. 301-670-8670 or www.lacademie.com.
A meningitis vaccination clinic for county residents entering college will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 18 at the Dennis Avenue Health Center, 2000 Dennis Ave., Silver Spring. The vaccine will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Any student under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the vaccination for college freshmen living in dormitory settings. Meningococcal bacteria infection may lead to meningitis and can cause swelling of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord or a serious blood infection. The disease is spread through air droplets and by direct contact with an infected person. The clinic is sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. 240-777-1050.
Montgomery College will hold auditions for its symphony orchestra at 10 a.m. Aug. 27. Students and community members, including returning orchestra members, must audition each semester.
Each musician will be asked to perform a solo piece of his or her choice without accompaniment, play scales and sight-read a selection chosen by the conductor. There are openings for the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, timpani, percussion and harp. Those who wish to earn college credit must enroll in the college orchestra course. The one-credit course will be held at 7 p.m. Mondays on the Rockville campus. Montgomery County public school students may earn student service learning credits for appropriate volunteer activities associated with their participation in the orchestra.
