Va. Official to Coordinate
Bicycle, Pedestrian Issues
David Patton has been named Virginia's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, state transportation officials announced.
Patton, an avid bicyclist and walker, will provide guidance and education on bicycle and pedestrian planning and design issues. He will also help develop promotional and educational materials and serve as the liaison on bicycling and pedestrian issues with other agencies, planning organizations, local governments and the public. Patton started Aug. 10.
Under state regulations, highway construction projects are supposed to accommodate bicycling and walking. The state recently broke ground on the Virginia Capital Trail, a 54-mile bike and walking path that will follow Route 5 from Richmond to Williamsburg.

Only One Local Debate
Set in Governor's Race
The scheduled debate Sept. 13 in Fairfax between the candidates for Virginia governor, Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) and Jerry W. Kilgore (R), is the only live televised face-off of the campaign planned in Northern Virginia, officials said.
The Sept. 13 event begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Hilton McLean in Tysons Corner. The Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the debate.
Though Kaine and Kilgore will appear on NewsChannel 8 in Northern Virginia, the hour-long debate will not be seen by voters elsewhere in the state. NewsChannel 8 will rebroadcast it later that evening.
NBC's Washington bureau chief, Tim Russert, will serve as moderator. A panel of journalists and a chamber member will ask the candidates questions.
