County Creates Hotline

For Gang Prevention

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan (D) announced the creation of a gang prevention and intervention hotline to help parents, teens and gang members deal with gang-related issues.

The phone number, 240-777-1245, formerly a county information and referral line to direct residents to nonprofit services, will be staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

"We need to attack the gang problem from every angle," Duncan said in a statement. "Providing information to parents and students about where to turn for help is an important part of our anti-gang strategy."

The hotline will offer assistance in multiple languages. After-hours calls will be referred to a 24-hour crisis center.

Repairs Begin on Two

C&O Canal Lockhouses

As part of a lockhouse preservation project, the C&O Canal National Historic Park has started repairs on Lockhouse 7 in Glen Echo and Lockhouse 11 in the Seven Locks area. Repairs are expected to be completed in late September.

The park is one of three national parks to receive a Save America's Treasures grant, administered by the National Park Service and the National Endowment for the Arts. Other partners include the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
