The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis:
Lorton Community Action Center needs volunteer drivers for its food pantry and volunteers for its One-to-One Tutoring Program and its English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. Drivers are needed to pick up donated food from local food stores one morning a week. Tutoring is on Tuesday evenings, and ESL classes are two nights a week. The Meals on Wheels Program of the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging needs volunteers to deliver meals to clients in the Baileys Crossroads area, the Little River Glen area and the Fairfax area. The National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly needs docents. Candidates must make a two-year commitment and complete 11 weeks of training. Docents are given a scheduled shift with a minimum of eight hours per month. Training classes begin on Sept. 10. For more information or to get an application, call

Haven of Northern Virginia needs volunteers to provide emotional support to the bereaved, the seriously ill, the dying and their families and friends. Volunteers must be available during weekdays and commit to a minimum of 21/2 hours a week of telephone duty for at least one year. A 30-hour training course will be held in September. The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia will hold training workshops to prepare volunteers to provide individualized instruction to adult students who want to improve their English literacy skills. Each tutor is trained, matched with a student and encouraged to meet at least once weekly for 90 minutes to help the student improve his or her English skills. No teaching or foreign language skills are required. A training fee of $35 covers the cost of books, materials and instruction. The next Basic Literacy Tutor Training workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on three consecutive Saturdays, Sept. 10, 17 and 24 at the James Lee Community Center, 2855-A Annandale Rd., Falls Church.
